Frederiksberg Palace

Frederiksberg Palace is a prominent Baroque residence situated in Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, Denmark, directly adjacent to the Copenhagen Zoo. Overlooking the expansive Frederiksberg Gardens, which were originally designed in the Baroque style to complement the estate, the palace stands as a significant architectural landmark. Construction of the complex spanned several decades, beginning in 1699 and reaching its final form in 1735. The structure evolved through three distinct phases: it started as a modest one-storey summer home for Crown Prince Frederick IV, was expanded into a three-storey H-shaped building by 1709 to reflect Italian Baroque influences, and finally received its encircling lateral wings between 1733 and 1738 under the direction of architect Lauritz de Thurah.

Historically, the palace served as a cherished summer residence for the Danish royal family from the early 18th century until the mid-19th century. It witnessed numerous significant royal events, including Frederick IV hosting Tsar Peter the Great in 1716 and marrying his mistress Anne Sophie Reventlow on the grounds in 1721. Later monarchs, such as Christian VII and Frederick VI, also resided there, with the latter holding a particular affection for the estate during his time as crown prince. The building's design was heavily influenced by Frederick IV's travels in Europe, specifically his admiration for Italian architecture, which shaped the aesthetic direction of the extensions.

Since 1869, the palace has transitioned from a royal dwelling to an educational institution, currently housing the Royal Danish Military Academy. Despite this change in function, the building remains well-preserved and continues to dominate the local landscape. Its proximity to the public gardens allows visitors to appreciate its grand façade and historical importance within the context of Danish royal history. The site remains a testament to the Baroque era in Denmark, blending military utility today with a rich past of royal leisure and diplomatic gatherings.
