Sovana

Sovana is a historic small town located in southern Tuscany, Italy, serving as a frazione of the comune of Sorano within the province of Grosseto. Situated at an elevation of 291 meters, this picturesque settlement is recognized as one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Its origins date back to the Etruscan civilization, after which it evolved into a Roman municipium and later became an episcopal see in the fifth century. The town holds significant historical importance as an administrative center for the Lombards following their conquest in the early seventh century. During the Middle Ages, known then as Soana, it served as the capital of the county under the powerful Aldobrandeschi family before declining in prominence when the Orsini family shifted the regional capital to nearby Pitigliano.

Architecturally, Sovana displays a rich blend of styles spanning from antiquity to the Renaissance. Although often associated with castles due to the Rocca Aldobrandesca, this fortress was largely dismantled in the seventeenth century, leaving only a portal, a tower, and sections of walls from its 1572 renovation. The town features notable religious structures including the Romanesque Sovana Cathedral, built over an eighth-century edifice, and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses an ancient pre-Romanesque ciborium. Secular landmarks include the Palazzo Pretorio and the late Renaissance Palazzo Bourbon del Monte. A remarkable archaeological discovery near the Church of San Mamiliano revealed a treasure of nearly five hundred gold coins from the fifth century AD.

The cultural legacy of Sovana is further distinguished as the birthplace of Pope Gregory VII. Today, the town remains a preserved historical site where visitors can explore the extensive Etruscan Necropolis alongside its medieval streets. While the original grand fortress no longer stands in its entirety, the remaining architectural elements and the well-preserved historic center reflect its long evolution from an Etruscan stronghold to a key medieval bishopric and finally to a cherished heritage village in modern Tuscany.
