Sorano

Sorano is an ancient medieval hill town located in the province of Grosseto within southern Tuscany, Italy. Perched dramatically on a tuff outcrop overlooking the Lente River, the town sits at an elevation of 379 meters. While the site was likely inhabited by the Villanovan culture, the first definitive historical records date back to the 3rd century BC when it existed as an Etruscan city under the influence of nearby Sovana. The town re-emerged in historical documents in 862 AD as a county founded by Emperor Louis II, eventually becoming a stronghold for the powerful Aldobrandeschi feudal family who dominated the region for over four centuries.

The architectural and historical identity of Sorano is deeply tied to its formidable fortress and strategic position, which made it a frequent target of attacks and internal family conflicts. In 1312, control passed to the Orsini family through marriage, leading to an era marked by fratricidal struggles and battles against the Republic of Siena. Although forced into Sienese suzerainty in 1417, Sorano regained full independence in 1556 following Siena's annexation by the Duchy of Tuscany. The town ultimately became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1604 and was later incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Today, it remains a well-preserved comune with a population of approximately 3,000 residents, administering several surrounding villages including Sovana and Castell'Ottieri.

Beyond its military and political past, Sorano holds a unique place in popular culture due to a long-running joke on The Jack Benny Program, where the comedian frequently mentioned the town in a fictional song. The municipality continues to serve as a cultural hub in the Grosseto province, celebrating its patron saint, St. Nicholas, every December 6. Its enduring stone structures and scenic location atop the volcanic rock formation offer visitors a tangible connection to its Etruscan origins and complex medieval history, maintaining its status as a significant historical site in central Italy.
