Castell'Azzara

Castell'Azzara is a historic municipality located in the Province of Grosseto within the Tuscany region of Italy. Situated approximately 120 kilometers southeast of Florence and 50 kilometers east of Grosseto, the town rests on the slopes of Monte Amiata at an elevation of 815 meters. While often referred to in the context of local fortifications, Castell'Azzara itself is a comune that traces its origins to medieval times. It was initially controlled by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family before becoming part of the Sforza County of Santa Fiora, a possession it held until 1624. Historically, the area gained significant economic importance due to the extraction of cinnabar, a mercury ore that fueled local industry for centuries.

The town features several notable architectural remnants that reflect its layered history. The most prominent structure is the Rocca Aldobrandesca, a castle complex of which the original palace and watchtower still stand today. Other key sights include the Church of San Nicola and the Church of Madonna del Rosario, both containing Renaissance elements such as chapels and apse frescoes. Additionally, the Villa Sforzesca, constructed by the Sforza family in the late 16th century, remains a testament to the town's noble past. Nearby, in the fraction of Selvena, visitors can find the ruins of Rocca Silvana, another fortress linked to the Aldobrandeschi lineage.

Currently, Castell'Azzara serves as a small residential community with a population of roughly 1,300 inhabitants. It maintains its cultural identity through the preservation of its religious and military structures, which attract tourists interested in Tuscan history and architecture. The town continues to operate under its official municipal administration, honoring Saint Nicholas as its patron saint. Despite its reduced size compared to its industrial peak during the mining era, Castell'Azzara remains a distinctive destination in southern Tuscany, offering a glimpse into the region's feudal past and geological heritage.
