Montevitozzo

Montevitozzo is a historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively serving as a frazione of the comune of Sorano, it sits at an elevation of 668 meters in the distinctive tuff landscape of southern Maremma. The settlement is positioned approximately 80 kilometers from Grosseto and 12 kilometers from Sorano along the provincial road connecting to Castell'Azzara. While the immediate village had a population of roughly 106 residents in 2001, its broader territory includes several smaller hamlets such as Casa della Fonte, Cerretino, and Marcelli, contributing to its rural character in the heart of the Italian countryside.

The site holds significant historical value, having been founded by the powerful Aldobrandeschi family during the 12th century. Over the subsequent centuries, control of the village shifted among major regional powers, including Orvieto in 1284, the Republic of Siena in the 15th century, the Orsini family of Pitigliano in the 16th century, and finally the Medici dynasty in the 17th century. This turbulent history is reflected in its architecture, most notably the original castle known as Roccaccia. Perched atop Monte Vitozzo, this medieval fortress now stands in ruins, serving as a silent testament to the area's strategic military past.

Today, Montevitozzo preserves key architectural sights from its evolution, blending religious and noble structures. The main parish church, San Giacomo, dates back to the 13th century with late 14th-century origins, having undergone multiple restructurings over time. Other religious sites include the 19th-century Immacolata Concezione and the small Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate in the hamlet of Marcelli. A standout feature of the Renaissance period is Villa Orsini, a fortified villa constructed by the Orsini family in the 16th century. Although the ancient castle is no longer habitable, the village remains an active community that maintains its cultural heritage through these enduring landmarks.
