Saturnia

Saturnia is an ancient spa town located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. It serves as a frazione of the comune of Manciano and sits at an elevation of 294 meters. While the settlement has been inhabited since prehistoric times, originally known as Aurinia before 30 BC, it takes its current name from the Roman god Saturn. According to local legend, Saturn struck the earth with a thunderbolt to create a magical warm spring intended to pacify warring humanity. Historically, the site was occupied by the Pelasgi and Etruscans before becoming a Roman colony in 183 BC. Visitors can still observe significant archaeological remnants, including polygonal city walls with Roman gateways and various tombs that hint at its deep antiquity.

The town experienced a turbulent medieval period, notably becoming a haven for outlaws in 1300 before being razed by Sienese forces. Following centuries of obscurity, Saturnia was rediscovered in the late nineteenth century when the surrounding lands were drained and a formal spa facility was constructed. Today, it is renowned for the Terme di Saturnia, where vast quantities of sulphurous water gush forth at 37 degrees Celsius. This water flows over waterfalls into natural calcareous pools formed by mineral deposition, attracting thousands of visitors annually who seek the therapeutic properties of the springs. Despite its small permanent population of approximately 280 residents, the town remains a vibrant destination for wellness tourism.

Architecturally, the town features the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, which houses notable religious art, including a fifteenth-century fresco attributed to Benvenuto di Giovanni. The blend of ancient Etruscan and Roman ruins with later medieval and modern developments creates a unique historical landscape. Although much of the original urban fabric was destroyed during medieval conflicts, the enduring presence of the thermal waters has ensured Saturnia's continuous relevance from ancient mythology to the present day. The site stands as a testament to the lasting human fascination with natural healing resources, bridging thousands of years of history in a single location.
