wikipedia

Sardarabad, also known as Sardari Berd, was a significant 19th-century fortress and urban center located near the modern village of Nor Armavir in Armenia's Armavir Province. Constructed between 1807 and 1827 under the direction of Hossein Qoli Khan, the Sardar of Erivan during the Qajar Iran era, the structure served as a strategic military installation designed to protect against invasions from Russia and the Ottoman Empire. It also functioned as a summer residence for the rulers of the Erivan Khanate. The fortress was built primarily using stone reclaimed from the ruins of the ancient Urartian city of Armavir. Its construction involved international expertise, with British experts participating in the build and French engineers reinforcing the defenses around 1808.

Architecturally, the fortress was a quadrangular complex featuring double walls, large towers, and four gates. Inside, the khan's palace and storehouses were situated near the southern wall, surrounded by extensive gardens irrigated by a canal drawn from the Aras River. During its peak, Sardarabad evolved into a minor urban hub inhabited by approximately 500 Armenian artisans and merchants, alongside a Muslim population composed mainly of military personnel. The site holds historical significance as a focal point of regional conflict, notably being captured by Russian forces under General Afanasy Krasovsky on September 20, 1827, an event that led to the departure of its Muslim inhabitants.

Today, the fortress is in a destroyed condition, with only ruins remaining at the site. Despite its physical demise, Sardarabad remains an important historical landmark representing the turbulent geopolitical shifts of the South Caucasus in the early 19th century. The location was once vividly depicted in mid-19th-century art, including a painting by Russian artist Grigory Gagarin showing trick riders before the fortress walls. While no longer standing as a functional military or residential center, its legacy persists through historical records and its role in the formation of modern Armenian territory following the decline of Persian influence in the region.
