Kakavaberd
wikipedia

Kakavaberd, also known as Geghi Berd, is a historic fortress situated on a high ridge overlooking the Azat River gorge within the Khosrov Forest State Reserve in Ararat Province, Armenia. Standing at an elevation of 1,516 meters above sea level, the site is naturally fortified by steep terrain that renders it inaccessible from three sides. While the exact construction date remains uncertain, with estimates pointing to the 4th century, the structure was first explicitly mentioned in historical records during the 9th and 10th centuries. The architectural remnants include well-preserved sections of fortification walls and northeastern towers that reach heights of eight to ten meters. Inside the defensive perimeter, visitors can observe the ruins of a church and various other auxiliary structures that once supported the garrison.

The fortress holds significant historical value due to its association with prominent Armenian noble families and pivotal military events. Originally controlled by the Bagratuni dynasty, it played a central role in the conflicts of 924 AD when the commander Beshir attacked the site following a defeat at Lake Sevan. Historical accounts describe how Gevorg Marzpetuni successfully defended the fortress against overwhelming odds. Ownership later transferred to the Pahlavuni family in the 11th century and subsequently to the Proshyan family during the 12th and 13th centuries. The site served as a strategic refuge for Ivane Mkhargrdzeli in 1224 after a battle near Garni, marking one of its last notable mentions in medieval chronicles before fading from active military use.

Today, Kakavaberd exists as an archaeological site characterized by its enduring stone walls and dramatic landscape setting. Although large sections of the fortifications remain intact, the area is not open to the general public without prior authorization. Access requires specific permission to enter the protected Khosrov Forest State Reserve, ensuring the preservation of both the natural environment and the ancient ruins. The site continues to be recognized for its strategic importance in Armenian history and has been immortalized in literature, including historical novels set in the 10th century that recount the bravery of its defenders.
