Kosh Fortress

Kosh Fortress is a medieval military structure located in the northern part of the village of Kosh, situated within the Ashtarak district approximately 18 kilometers southwest of the district center. Constructed during the 13th century, the fortress sits prominently atop a hill and exhibits distinct architectural features characteristic of the period. The structure is defined by its right-angled corners and circular towers, built using a combination of materials that reflect both durability and available resources. The upper sections were crafted from clearly cut large tuff stone blocks, while the lower foundation consists of rough-cut basalt blocks. Access to the interior is provided through entrances on the north and south sides, which lead into corridors covered by ceilings.

The historical significance of the site extends beyond the fortress walls to the surrounding landscape of Kosh, a settlement with roots tracing back to early Iron Age residential ruins and mentions in Armenian scripts from the 5th century. Just south of the village stands a monumental red tuff khachkar dating to 1195. Standing 6.8 meters tall, this stone cross is dedicated to the liberation of the Aragatzotn region from the Seljuk Turks, marking the area as a site of pivotal national resistance. Within the village boundaries, other protected historical assets include the St. Grigor church from the 13th to 14th centuries, the 19th-century St. Gevork church, and an 18th-century oil refinery.

Today, the fortress and the village of Kosh serve as important cultural landmarks within the Aragatsotn Province. While the specific current condition of the masonry is not detailed in available records, the site remains categorized as a key tourist attraction and a protected fort in Armenia. The presence of multiple religious structures and the ancient khachkar monument suggests that the area functions as an open-air historical museum, preserving layers of history from the Iron Age through the medieval period up to the 19th century for visitors and historians alike.
