Sangaste Castle

Sangaste Castle is a historic estate located in Sangaste, within Otepää Parish and Valga County, Estonia. Constructed between 1879 and 1881, the building was commissioned by Friedrich Berg and designed by the architect Otto Pius Hippius. It stands as one of the most impressive examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the Baltic States, featuring distinct influences from Tudor style. The structure is characterized by its varied tower shapes, protruding sections, and a tall main entrance tower. Although it lacks a traditional drawbridge or trench, the design successfully mimics the aesthetic of English castles, which was the specific inspiration for Count Berg when he sought to replace the family's older mansion.

The interior originally contained 99 rooms, a number deliberately chosen to adhere to a rule limiting residences to fewer than 100 rooms. Key features included a grand Gothic ballroom, a Spanish room, an English-style hunting room, and a glass-roofed winter garden that no longer exists. The layout was strictly hierarchical, with the count's private quarters and reception areas on the first floor, family bedrooms and a library on the second, and staff accommodations on the third. Notably, the main entrance hall possesses unique acoustics that allow whispers to travel clearly from one corner to another. During the Soviet era, the property served as a Pioneer Camp, at which time the room count increased to 149 due to the conversion of storage spaces.

Today, Sangaste Castle remains open to the public and serves as a significant cultural landmark. Despite its historical importance and architectural grandeur, the property has faced recent uncertainties regarding its ownership and future. In September 2023, the castle was put up for auction with an opening price of €2.6 million. While some original elements like the winter garden have been lost over time, the building retains its striking exterior profile and many of its grand interior spaces, continuing to attract visitors interested in its rich history and unique design.
