Toolse Castle

Toolse is a small village located in Haljala Parish within Lääne-Viru County in northeastern Estonia. While the settlement itself is modest, it is historically renowned as the site of Toolse Castle, also known by its German name Tolsburg. This formidable structure was a crusader castle constructed by the Teutonic Order and was officially completed in 1471. Architecturally, it served as an Ordensburg, a specific type of fortress built by military religious orders during the Northern Crusades. Its strategic placement on the coast granted it significant historical importance, as it was reportedly considered the northernmost outpost of the Holy Roman Empire at the height of its power, marking a critical defensive border for the region.

Today, the once-mighty fortress no longer stands intact, and only ruins remain to testify to its former grandeur. The site has transitioned from an active military installation to a protected historical landmark. Recognizing the value of these remnants, authorities initiated a comprehensive conservation and archaeological survey scheme in 2006 to study and preserve the remaining structures. These ongoing efforts aim to stabilize the ruins and uncover further details about the castle's layout and history. The location continues to attract interest from historians and tourists alike, offering a tangible connection to Estonia's medieval past and the influence of the Teutonic Knights in the Baltic region.
