Vääna Castle

Vääna is a village located in Harku Parish, Harju County, northern Estonia, situated approximately 20 kilometers from the capital city of Tallinn. While the site was first recorded in 1325 as Feyena and originally featured a fortified manor or castle, the current main structure is a manor house built between 1784 and 1797. Commissioned by the Baltic German von Stackelberg family, the building was designed by an anonymous Italian architect in the late baroque style. The architecture features a long main house with wings and circular pavilions containing preserved decorated vaulted roofs.

Historically, the manor was known for an impressive art collection reputed to include works by Hans Holbein, Nicolas Poussin, and Antoine Watteau. It was also the childhood home of the notable archaeologist Otto Magnus von Stackelberg. Although remnants of the earlier medieval fortifications were reconstructed in a romantic fashion during the 19th century and remain visible in the park, the main building serves a civic purpose today. Currently, the manor houses a kindergarten-elementary school established in 1855, along with a public library and internet access point, preserving the site as a functional community hub.
