Vao Castle

Vao Castle, also known historically as Wack, is a well-preserved medieval tower fortress located in the village of Vao within Väike-Maarja Parish, Lääne-Viru County, in northeastern Estonia. Constructed during the latter half of the 14th century, the structure exemplifies the architectural style of a vassal castle. These smaller fortifications were strategically built to maintain local control in regions where massive strongholds were unnecessary, sharing design similarities with other notable Estonian examples such as Purtse and Kiiu castles. Built from local limestone, the four-storey tower features walls that suggest it was not intended for major military operations, and historical records indicate it was never involved in significant armed conflict.

The site holds considerable historical significance due to its long lineage of ownership. By 1442, the castle belonged to the Wack family, after which it passed through the hands of various aristocratic families over the centuries. By the 1770s, the tower had ceased functioning as a primary residence, evidenced by the construction of a new Baroque manor house nearby. In 1986, the fortress underwent a comprehensive renovation that restored its structural integrity and enhanced its interior with painted glass windows created by Estonian artists Tuuli Puhvel and Anne Ehasalu. Today, the castle serves as a museum, offering visitors insight into medieval life and architecture while standing as a testament to the region's feudal past.

While the castle itself remains a peaceful cultural landmark, the surrounding village of Vao gained modern notoriety starting in 2014 when it became the location of the Vao Accommodation Centre for asylum seekers. This facility became a focal point during the European migrant crisis, attracting media attention and hosting demonstrations against refugees. The tension culminated on September 3, 2015, when the external wall of the center was set on fire in an act of arson, though fortunately, no injuries were reported during the incident.
