Sev Berd
Sev Berd, also known as the Black Fortress, is a historic military structure located in Gyumri within the Shirak Province of Armenia. Situated on a hill merely eight kilometers from the Turkish border, this abandoned Imperial Russian fortress was constructed between 1834 and 1847. The site derives its distinctive name from its unique architectural design, featuring a 360-degree circular structure built entirely from black stone. Originally established as a strategic response to the Russo-Turkish War of 1828–1829, the fortification required a decade to complete after the first stones were laid. Following Russia's defeat in the Crimean War, the facility was upgraded to a first-class fortress, playing a pivotal role in subsequent Russian victories against Ottoman forces through 1878 before being downgraded in status once new strongholds were secured elsewhere.
Although the fortress never endured a direct siege, it remains a significant national cultural heritage monument and a testament to the region's volatile military history. The site is located adjacent to the Russian 102nd Military Base, which was established in the 1940s and continues to operate today, providing national defense support for Armenia. For many years, Sev Berd stood as a silent witness to the shifting borders and conflicts that defined the Caucasus region during the nineteenth century. Its robust construction and strategic positioning made it a critical asset for the Russian Empire during an era of frequent warfare with neighboring Turkey.
In recent developments, the fortress was purchased by the Balasanyan family in 2012 with the ambitious goal of transforming the historic site into a major tourist attraction. Owner Misak Balasanyan has expressed intentions to revitalize the location, though the project has awaited specific government decisions to proceed fully. Currently, archaeological efforts are ongoing at the site to uncover more details about its past and ensure proper preservation. As plans for its future use evolve, Sev Berd stands poised to transition from a relic of imperial conflict into a cultural destination that educates visitors about Armenia's complex historical landscape.
