Lori Fortress
wikipedia

Lori Fortress is an 11th-century Armenian military installation located in the Lori Province of Armenia, situated near the village of Lori Berd. Perched on a mountainous plateau at an elevation of 1,490 meters, the site commands a strategic position at the intersection of the Urut and Dzoraget rivers. Constructed in 1065 by King David I Anhoghin, the fortress was originally established to serve as the capital of the Kingdom of Tashir-Dzoraget. The structure is built primarily from distinctive black tuff stone and once supported a thriving community of approximately 10,000 inhabitants, functioning as a major regional hub during the medieval period.

The fortress holds significant historical importance due to its involvement in several pivotal regional conflicts. In 1177, it served as the location where Georgian King Giorgi III besieged his rebellious nephew, Demna. Later, in 1239, the stronghold was captured by Chagatai the Elder, a commander of the Mongol Empire. Architecturally, the site features complex engineering, including two bathhouses equipped with domes for lighting and ventilation, clay pipe irrigation systems, and a large civic building. This civic structure has a varied religious history, having served as a mosque during the 14th and 15th centuries before being converted into a church in the 18th century.

Today, Lori Fortress exists as a ruin open to the public, with portions of the fortification walls, bathhouses, and other buildings still standing. As of 2024, extensive restoration works are underway to preserve the remaining structures, including the walls and the former civic building. These conservation efforts are estimated to continue for several years to ensure the longevity of this medieval landmark. Despite its damaged state, the site remains a key cultural destination, offering visitors a glimpse into Armenia's rich military and architectural heritage through its surviving gates, ruined churches, and ancient infrastructure.
