Novigrad na Dobri

Novigrad na Dobri is a small village located in Karlovac County, Croatia, situated along the Dobra River. The site is best known for its historic castle, which stands prominently on a cliff above the river's right bank. Although the exact construction date remains unknown, the fortress is widely recognized as a 14th-century structure that once served as a possession of the influential Croatian noble family, the Frankopans. Despite frequent but unverified claims that the castle dates back to 1193, historical records only definitively mention the site starting in 1495, with a significant gap in documentation until 1550. The name Novigrad na Dobri translates to New Town on the Dobra, reflecting its strategic position near major transport routes.

The castle features a distinctive scalene triangle floorplan, characterized by a large circular tower on the north corner and two smaller circular towers at the other points, connected by multi-storeyed living quarters. Its inner court is surrounded by open arcades, with the sole entrance located on the south side. Historically, the fortress was a vital economic hub, generating substantial income from a toll bridge over the Dobra River and hosting a marketplace beneath its walls. However, its history includes periods of violence, notably in 1543 when Ottoman forces burned the castle along with nearby settlements. Today, the surrounding park that was once meticulously maintained has become overgrown, and the structure stands as a visible landmark from the modern A6 highway and local roads.

While the village itself had a population of just 62 residents as of the 2021 census, the castle remains a significant architectural remnant of the region's feudal past. Its proximity to other historic sites like Dubovac and Zvečaj castles highlights its role within a broader network of medieval defenses. Although specific details regarding its current ownership or active use are sparse in available records, the building's enduring presence on the cliffside offers a tangible link to the era of the Frankopan family and the turbulent conflicts between Croatian nobility and expanding Ottoman territories during the 16th century.
