Novi Zrin

Novi Zrin
wikipedia

Novi Zrin, also known as Zrínyiújvár, was a strategic stone fortress located at the confluence of the Mura and Drava rivers in northern Croatia, near the border with Hungary. Constructed between 1661 and 1664 by the prominent Zrinski noble family under Nikola VII Zrinski, this marsh castle served as a critical military installation designed to halt the advance of Ottoman forces into Croatian territory. Built entirely of stone during the mid-17th century, the fortification represented a significant architectural and defensive effort intended to secure the region against imperial expansion from the east.

The historical significance of Novi Zrin lies in its brief but intense existence as a battleground during the Ottoman wars. Although Ottoman armies attacked the site repeatedly between 1662 and 1664 without success, the fortress ultimately faced a massive siege in June 1664 led personally by Grand Vizier Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Pasha. Commanding a force of up to 100,000 men, the Ottomans successfully breached the defenses, destroying the castle completely on July 7, 1664. This event marked the end of the structure's active use after only three years, transforming it from a symbol of resistance into a ruin.

Today, Novi Zrin no longer stands as a physical structure, having been utterly demolished during the final siege. The site is currently marked by a memorial obelisk situated along the Mura River to commemorate the fallen fortress and the historical events that transpired there. While the castle itself is gone, its legacy persists through annual commemorations, such as the 350th anniversary events held in Donja Dubrava, and ongoing scientific conferences dedicated to preserving the memory of Nikola Zrinski and the defense of the region.
