Kaninë Castle
Kaninë Castle is located in the village of Kaninë, near Vlorë, in southwestern Albania. The castle was built in the 3rd century BC and was reconstructed by Justinian I in the 6th century AD. It was originally erected as a fortification for the ancient settlement in the area and was later transformed into a fortress town in the 4th century AD.
The castle has played a significant role in the history of Albania, serving as the center of the Principality of Valona in the 14th century and as the seat of the Province of Kaninë during Hohenstaufen Albania. It was also an important fortification during the Morean War in 1690, when it fell under Venetian control before being besieged and taken by the Ottomans. The castle covers an area of 3.6 hectares and is situated on the side of the Shushicë Mountain, about 380 meters above sea level.
