Porto Palermo Castle
Porto Palermo Castle is an Ottoman-era fortress located near Himarë in southern Albania, situated within the Porto Palermo bay along the Albanian Riviera. Constructed in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha of Tepelena, the castle was originally built on a small island later connected to the mainland through landfill. Its three-sided design features prominent gun bastions at each corner, a hexagonal central chamber with a domed ceiling supported by six pillars, and rectangular soldier quarters. Additional defensive elements include observation posts and stone-roofed guard houses, reflecting classic Ottoman military architecture.
The site holds significant historical value as the best-preserved garrison from Ali Pasha’s regional defensive network, with strategic use dating back to antiquity through World War II. Today, it is open to the public and forms part of a protected landscape designated by the Albanian government, encompassing the bay and nearby Llamani beach. Its well-maintained condition offers visitors a tangible connection to Albania’s coastal military heritage, blending historical preservation with natural beauty.
