Junkarsborg

Junkarsborg was a medieval castle located in Karis, within the municipality of Raseborg in southern Finland. Situated on a forested island in the middle of the Svartå river, the site is accessible only by foot. Archaeologists estimate that the fortress was constructed in the early 14th century and remained in use until the early 15th century. It is widely believed to have served as a direct predecessor to the nearby Castle of Raseborg, which stands just a few kilometers away. The historical timeline of the site is supported by the discovery of coins dating from the late 14th century found during various investigations.

Today, the castle exists solely as ruins, characterized by rectangular earth walls that mark the former perimeter of the structure. The site has undergone significant archaeological scrutiny, with major excavations taking place between 1891 and 1892, again in 1937, and extensively from 1950 to 1954. These efforts have helped clarify the layout and history of the fortification despite the lack of standing stone structures. In an effort to preserve the landmark and make it more accessible to visitors, reconstruction and landscaping work were undertaken between 2005 and 2006. These improvements focused on enhancing the visual appearance of the ruins and facilitating safer access to the isolated island location.

As a historical landmark, Junkarsborg represents an important chapter in the defensive history of the Uusimaa region during the medieval period. Although no buildings remain intact, the earthworks provide tangible evidence of early military architecture in Finland before the establishment of the more famous Raseborg Castle. The site is categorized as a significant ruin and serves as a point of interest for those studying the 14th-century establishments in the area. Its preservation ensures that the legacy of this early fortress continues to be recognized within the broader context of Finnish cultural heritage and local history.
