Jerinin Grad

Jerinin Grad, also known as Jerina's Town, is a significant early medieval archaeological site located in the village of Brangović, approximately seven kilometers southwest of Valjevo in western Serbia. Situated on a high cliff along the west slopes of Branig hill, the fortress overlooks the east bank of the Gradac River. The site covers a preserved area of three hectares, making it one of the largest fortifications in northwestern Serbia. Its irregular angular layout measures roughly 320 by 220 meters, with elevations ranging from 268 to 441 meters. The structure originally featured towers and long walls constructed from cut stone and lime mortar, strategically designed with sharp edges and strengthened points to prevent enemy access while commanding views of the river below.

The historical significance of the site is deeply rooted in local folklore and medieval defense strategies. Locals historically attributed the massive city walls to the legendary fairy Jerina, believing them to be the result of a supernatural curse, which gave the site its enduring name. During the period of Ottoman expansion, the fortress served a practical purpose as a hiding place for the local population, earning it the colloquial name "Runaway." Archaeological investigations have revealed substantial remains, including vestiges of a church dating back to the sixth century, indicating continuous habitation and religious importance throughout the early medieval period. These findings highlight the site's role as both a military stronghold and a community center during turbulent times in Balkan history.

Today, Jerinin Grad is recognized as a Cultural Heritage site under the protection of the Republic of Serbia. The location falls under the joint auspices of the Valjevo municipality and the nearby Ćelije Monastery, ensuring its preservation for future study and visitation. While the fortress exists now primarily as ruins, the remaining fortifications offer valuable insights into early medieval architectural styles and defensive engineering in the region. The site stands as a testament to the area's rich past, blending tangible historical evidence with enduring local legends that have kept the memory of Jerina and her town alive for centuries.
