Fetislam
Fetislam, also known as Novigrad, is a historic stone fortress located a few kilometers upstream from the town of Kladovo on the right bank of the Danube River in Serbia. Constructed initially around 1524 by the Ottoman Empire, the site was designed as a strategic military installation to complete a defensive line against the Kingdom of Hungary and serve as a launch point for assaults on Transylvania. The complex eventually evolved into two distinct sections: the Smaller Town, built first, and the Greater Town, which was added later during the Austro-Turkish wars of the eighteenth century to enhance its strategic capabilities. Over time, dirt ramparts were reinforced with stone curtain walls, transforming the site into a formidable artillery bastion surrounded by a deep, water-filled trench fed by a branch of the Danube.
The fortress holds significant historical value as a cultural monument of great importance within the Republic of Serbia. It remained under Turkish garrison control until 1867, when it was officially handed over to Serbian Prince Mihajlo Obrenović along with six other cities, marking a pivotal moment in the region's political history. For centuries, the structure stood as a testament to Ottoman military architecture and the turbulent conflicts between empires in the Balkans. Its preservation ensures that the legacy of these geopolitical struggles remains visible along the Danube corridor.
Following extensive renovations completed in 2023, Fetislam has been revitalized for modern public use while retaining its historical integrity. The restoration project included repairing entrance gates, lagoons, summer stages, and ramparts. A new modern visitor center now connects the Smaller and Greater towns, housing exhibitions that educate guests about the site's rich past. Today, the fortress is open to the public, serving as both a protected heritage site and a key tourist destination in eastern Serbia, offering visitors a tangible connection to its five hundred-year history.
