Diana Fortress

Diana Fortress is a well-preserved Roman military fort situated on the cliffs of the Đerdap gorge above the Danube River, near the hamlet of Karataš in eastern Serbia. Originally constructed during the Tiberian-Claudian age as part of the Moesian Limes frontier system, the structure was significantly rebuilt in 101 AD under Emperor Trajan in preparation for the Dacian Wars. This reconstruction expanded the fort to 1.7 hectares using stone materials and included semicircular towers. The site holds immense historical significance as it guarded the entrance to a massive canal dug by Trajan to bypass dangerous river cataracts, an engineering feat commemorated by the famous Imperial Tablet discovered nearby.

Throughout its existence, the fortress underwent several modifications to enhance its defensive capabilities, particularly during the late third and early fourth centuries when additional towers were added facing the river. Although damaged by Hun invasions in the mid-fourth century, the fort was restored by Emperor Justinian in 530 AD. At its peak, it housed detachments from prominent Roman legions such as the VII Claudia and various auxiliary cohorts. Archaeological excavations have revealed extensive remains, including an aqueduct, a civilian settlement, a cemetery, and numerous artifacts ranging from daily tools to marble sculptures, making it one of the most thoroughly explored forts along the Danube frontier.

Today, Diana Fortress is designated as an Archaeological Site of Exceptional Importance in Serbia and remains open to visitors. Its strategic location overlooking the Iron Gate section of the Danube offers insight into ancient Roman military logistics and engineering. The site stands as a testament to the empire's efforts to secure its borders and facilitate navigation through one of Europe's most challenging river landscapes, preserving layers of history from its initial construction through its Byzantine revival.
