Belgrade Fortress

The Belgrade Fortress is a historic fortification located in the Stari Grad municipality of Belgrade, Serbia. Situated at the strategic confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, it serves as the historical core of the modern city. The complex encompasses the old citadel, divided into Upper and Lower Towns, and the expansive Kalemegdan Park. Originally established in 279 BC, the site has been repeatedly reconstructed over millennia by various rulers, including Emperor Justinian I in 535, Despot Stefan Lazarević in 1403, and Nicolas Doxat de Démoret between 1723 and 1736. Built primarily from stone, the fortress displays a layered architectural history reflecting the many civilizations that have controlled it.

This site holds immense historical significance as the stage for numerous major military conflicts, including famous sieges in 1456, 1521, 1688, and 1789. Its strategic position made it a coveted prize for empires ranging from the Romans and Byzantines to the Ottomans and Austro-Hungarians. Today, the fortress is owned by the City of Belgrade and operated by a public enterprise. It remains in good condition and is fully open to the public, functioning as a major cultural landmark and recreational space. In recognition of its value, it was designated a Cultural Monument of Exceptional Importance by Serbia in 1965.
