Ariljača
Harilaq Fortress, also known as Kalaja e Harilaqit or Gradina, is a significant hilltop fortification located in the village of Harilaq, Kosovo. Situated approximately nine kilometers southwest of Fushe Kosova and sixteen kilometers from Pristina, the site occupies a strategic 1.3-hectare forested hill with elevations ranging between 736 and 767 meters. This vantage point offers sweeping views over the Kosovo field and portions of several surrounding municipalities, including Pristina, Obiliq, and Lipjan. Before modern archaeological interventions, the ramparts and interior structures were largely concealed by soil and dense vegetation, hiding its historical prominence for centuries.
The origins of the fortress trace back to prehistoric times, but it reached its peak development during late Antiquity and the early Byzantine period. It is historically distinguished as one of the many strongholds reconstructed or built in the Roman province of Dardania under the orders of Emperor Justinian the Great between 527 and 565 AD. This extensive building campaign was documented by the historian Procopius in his sixth-century work, De Aedificiis. The architecture of Harilaq differs notably from other contemporary fortifications in the Central Balkans, marking it as a unique example of military engineering from this era.
Systematic archaeological excavations conducted between 2005 and 2009 revealed the site's complex internal layout. Teams uncovered substantial remains including circuit walls, rampart towers, a three-naved church, and two rounded sacral buildings of unknown specific purpose. Today, the fortress is recognized as an archaeological site of great importance, offering critical insights into the region's defensive history and religious life during the transition from antiquity to the medieval period. While the site has been studied extensively, it stands as a preserved monument reflecting the layered history of human settlement in Kosovo.
