Bolvan Fortress

Bolvan Fortress, also known as Bovan Fortress or Jerina's City, is a historic stone fortification located in Serbia, approximately nine kilometers northeast of the town of Aleksinac near the village and lake of Bovan. Perched above the Moravica River, the site likely rests on the foundations of an ancient Roman castrum called Praesidium Pompei. Although its exact construction date is unknown, the fortress was first documented in 1395 within a legal decree by Princess Milica of Serbia. It served as a strategic border defense for the Serbian Despotate and functioned as a vital salt depository during the era of Moravian Serbia before falling under Ottoman control.

The stronghold is deeply embedded in local folklore under the name Jerina's City, attributed to Despotess Irene Kantakouzene, wife of Đurađ Branković. While popular legends claim she built the fortress using forced labor and connected it to a nearby hill with a hanging bridge, historical records indicate she had no actual involvement in its construction. The name Bolvan itself may derive from a Proto-Slavic word for idol, suggesting a pre-Christian Slavic temple once occupied the location. The fortress played a role during significant historical conflicts, including the Ottoman conquest of Serbia and the Crusade of Varna, remaining in use until the mid-fifteenth century.

Today, Bolvan Fortress exists as an open-air ruin accessible to the public. While the structure has suffered the ravages of time and conflict, leaving it in a dilapidated condition, it remains a notable landmark for visitors interested in medieval Serbian history. The site offers a glimpse into the region's turbulent past, marking the transition between Christian Serbian rule and the expanding Ottoman Empire. Despite the lack of standing walls or complete structures, its position overlooking the river and its connection to both Roman antiquity and Serbian medieval statehood make it a point of cultural interest.
