Zawichost is a historic town located in Sandomierz County within the Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship of Poland. Situated on the western bank of the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, it lies approximately 17 kilometers northwest of Sandomierz near the scenic Lesser Polish Gorge. First mentioned in historical documents around 1148 as a castellan seat and market center, the settlement grew into a significant urban hub during the late Middle Ages. It was granted town rights likely before 1255 and later became a royal town under King Kazimierz Wielki, who constructed a strategic castle to guard the vital river crossing. The town prospered in the 15th and 16th centuries due to its position on merchant routes between Kraków and Lithuania.

The site holds considerable historical significance, notably as the location of the 1205 Battle of Zawichost, where forces of Leszek I the White defeated Roman the Great. However, the town suffered devastating blows from Mongol raids in the 13th century and catastrophic destruction during the 17th-century Deluge. Swedish and Transylvanian invaders burned the royal castle, which stood in ruins until its remaining walls collapsed into the Vistula during a flood in 1813. Following these events, coupled with fire, plague, and restrictive border policies after the Partitions of Poland, Zawichost never fully recovered its former prominence and eventually lost its town rights in 1888.

Today, Zawichost remains a small community with a population of roughly 1,800 residents. While the medieval castle no longer stands, the town retains its historical character and serves as a local administrative center within Gmina Zawichost. Access across the Vistula River is maintained via ferry rather than a bridge. The area continues to reflect its layered past, including the 19th-century merger with the neighboring Jewish town of Prosperów, offering visitors a glimpse into the complex social and military history of Lesser Poland.
