Water Tower, Maribor

The Maribor Water Tower is a prominent medieval fortified structure located in the city of Maribor, Slovenia, standing directly adjacent to the Drava River. Constructed in 1555 during the late Renaissance period, this pentagonal tower was built from massive limestone blocks to strengthen the southeastern section of the historic city walls against potential Ottoman raids. Its design features strategic embrasures and reflects the military architectural priorities of the time, serving as a crucial defensive point protecting the municipal port. Before its construction, the area was guarded by earlier round towers, but the decision to expand fortifications led Italian master builders to erect this enduring landmark alongside the now-demolished Benetke Tower.

The tower possesses a remarkable modern history involving its near-destruction and subsequent salvation. In the 1960s, the construction of the Zlatoličje Hydroelectric Plant caused water levels in the Drava to rise significantly, threatening to submerge the old urban core. While many surrounding medieval structures were demolished between 1966 and 1967, the Water Tower was saved through the dedicated efforts of builder Jože Požauk. In an impressive engineering feat conducted from 1967 to 1968, the entire 1,500-ton mass of the tower was physically raised by 2.6 meters over seven months to ensure its safety from the rising reservoir waters.

Today, the Water Tower stands as a well-preserved historical monument in the center of Maribor and serves a vibrant cultural purpose. It currently houses Slovenia's oldest wine cellar, operating as a specialized shop on the ground floor that offers top-quality Slovenian wines. The upper level features a spacious, round hall with a high ceiling reminiscent of a medieval banquet room, which is dedicated entirely to wine tasting experiences. This adaptive reuse ensures the tower remains a living part of the city's heritage, connecting visitors to both its military past and the region's renowned viticulture tradition.
