Mokrice Castle

Mokrice Castle is a historic medieval fortress situated on a hill in the settlement of Rajec, within the Gorjanci Hills southeast of Brežice, Slovenia. Located near the Croatian border, the structure was first documented in 1444 and has undergone significant transformations throughout its existence, including major rebuilding efforts in the 16th century and again in 1941. Over the centuries, the estate served as the residence for several prominent noble lineages, most notably the Erdődy and Auersperg families, who shaped its legacy before the mid-20th century.

Following World War II, the castle was repurposed into a hotel and restaurant complex, marking a shift from private aristocratic residence to public hospitality venue. Today, it is operated by Terme Čatež and functions as a unique destination that blends historical architecture with modern leisure amenities. The grounds famously expanded in 1988 to include an expansive 18-hole golf course covering more than 66 hectares, making it a notable spot for sports enthusiasts visiting the Lower Carniola region.

Beyond its architectural and recreational value, Mokrice Castle holds a distinctive place in pop culture history. In 1988, the English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys selected the castle as the primary filming location for their music video titled Heart. This production featured renowned English actor Ian McKellen, adding a layer of international cultural significance to the site. The castle remains a well-preserved example of Slovenian heritage, successfully maintaining its historical character while serving as an active hotel and golf resort.
