Medija Castle
Medija Castle, known locally as Medijski grad and historically as Schloss Gallenegg, is a ruined fortress situated in the southern part of Podlipovica, west of Izlake within the Municipality of Zagorje ob Savi in central-eastern Slovenia. While the exact year of its original construction is not detailed in available records, the site holds deep historical roots as the childhood home of Johann Weikhard von Valvasor, a renowned polymath whose parents once owned the estate. It is widely believed to be his final resting place, cementing the location's significance in Slovenian cultural history. The architectural remnants visible today reflect a structure that served as a prominent noble residence before suffering extensive damage during the conflicts of the twentieth century.
The main castle buildings and associated stables were destroyed by Yugoslav Partisans during World War II, leaving the complex in a state of ruin. Despite this devastation, the castle chapel survived and has since been carefully restored to its former glory. This surviving structure has found new life in the modern era, serving as a vibrant venue for various cultural events, including theatrical plays, concerts, and wedding ceremonies. Visitors to the site can currently explore the restored chapel alongside the atmospheric ruins of the stables and the historic courtyard, which stand as silent testaments to the property's turbulent past.
Today, Medija Castle is officially registered as an immovable cultural heritage site by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. Although the majority of the original fortress lies in ruins, the preservation of the chapel ensures that the location remains an active part of the local community rather than a forgotten relic. The juxtaposition of the destroyed residential quarters with the functional, restored religious space offers a unique glimpse into the region's layered history, bridging the gap between its aristocratic origins, its destruction in war, and its contemporary role as a center for arts and celebration in the Zagorje ob Savi municipality.
