Szprotawa

The Chrobry Gord is a significant archaeological earthwork and historical monument located near the town of Szprotawa in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of southwestern Poland. Situated within the Park Słowiański nature reserve in the old Bóbr river valley, the site features a large polygonal plateau covering four hectares. This raised platform stands approximately six meters above the surrounding terrain, characterized by flat surfaces and regular, steep inclined edges. The structure is strategically positioned between a bog and a marsh, although these water features have partially dried out over time. Historically known as Nun Bush Hill prior to 1945, the site was renamed to honor Bolesław I the Brave, the first crowned ruler of Poland, reflecting its perceived connection to the early Polish state.

The exact construction date of the fortification remains unknown, though historical analysis provides some context regarding its era and usage. While early twentieth-century German historians suggested the site dated from the period when the lands were under Polish control, modern examinations by local experts have offered more specific insights. Ceramic fragments discovered during excavations indicate a Medieval origin, leading researchers to conclude that the structure was either never fully completed or inhabited only for a brief duration. Despite these uncertainties regarding its active life, the site stands as one of the largest earthworks of its kind in the country, offering valuable clues about regional defense systems and settlement patterns during the Middle Ages.

Today, the Chrobry Gord is recognized as a place of designated historical importance, a status officially granted in May 2007 following advocacy by the local historical society. The site continues to be a focus for archaeological interest, with notable excavations conducted by the Polish Academy of Sciences as recently as 2008. Rather than serving as a functional building or residence in the modern era, it exists primarily as a protected monument and educational resource. Visitors and researchers can observe the remnants of the ancient earthworks, which provide a tangible link to the region's complex past. The preservation of this site ensures that the physical evidence of Szprotawa's early history remains accessible for future study and public appreciation within the natural landscape of the reserve.
