Międzyrzecz Castle

Międzyrzecz Castle, also known as the Royal Piast Castle, is a historic Gothic stronghold located in the town of Międzyrzecz within the Lubusz Voivodeship of Poland. Situated on a small hill between the floodplains of the Obra and Paklica Rivers, the site originally hosted a wooden gord dating back to the ninth century. The stone castle itself was constructed around 1350 under the reign of King Casimir III the Great, replacing earlier fortifications that likely included a stone tower from the thirteenth century. The structure is surrounded by a dike and represents a significant example of medieval military architecture in the region, blending its strategic riverine location with robust defensive design.

The castle possesses a rich and turbulent history, having been captured by King Matthias Corvinus of Hungary in 1474 and heavily damaged by the Teutonic Order in 1520. Following subsequent modernizations that added bastions in the late sixteenth century, the fortress suffered destruction during the Swedish Deluge in 1655. By the eighteenth century, it was too damaged for residential use and eventually passed to Prussian hands after the Second Partition of Poland, serving utilitarian roles as a warehouse and winery. Despite centuries of conflict and neglect, the site avoided total ruin thanks to extensive renovations carried out in the 1950s and 1960s, which included reconstructing the gatehouse and living quarters.

Today, Międzyrzecz Castle functions as a museum, preserving the cultural heritage of the area since 1945. Archaeological excavations conducted between 1954 and 1958 further illuminated its past. In recognition of its enduring historical value, the castle and its surrounding manor park complex were officially designated a Historic Monument of Poland in November 2024. This recent designation underscores its importance as a preserved landmark that has evolved from a medieval defensive post to a key educational and tourist attraction in western Poland.
