Słońsk

Słońsk, historically known as Sonnenburg, is a village located in Sulęcin County within the Lubusz Voivodeship of western Poland. Situated approximately 12 kilometers east of the German border along national road DK22, the settlement lies near the Ujście Warty National Park. First mentioned in historical documents in 1295, the site has evolved significantly over centuries, transitioning from a medieval holding of the Knights Templar to a key location for the Order of Saint John. Although it held town privileges between 1808 and 1947, it was eventually reclassified as a village due to its small population size. Today, it serves as a local administrative center with a population of roughly 3,000 residents.

The architectural and historical landscape of Słońsk is defined by its strategic importance during the Middle Ages. The original castle was constructed in 1341 by the von Uechtenhagen family, but the site gained prominence after the Order of Saint John acquired it in the 15th century. The Order greatly expanded the settlement, erecting a new castle between 1545 and 1564 and building a significant church between 1474 and 1522. These structures reflected the Bailiwick of Brandenburg's influence, turning the location into a regional hub for religious and administrative activities before it later became part of the Kingdom of Prussia and subsequently Germany.

In the modern era, Słońsk acquired a somber historical significance. An 1832 prison built on the site once detained notable Polish independence fighters, including Karol Libelt. During the Second World War, Nazi authorities converted this facility into the Sonnenburg concentration camp in 1933, where numerous political prisoners were persecuted and killed. Following the war, the town was reintegrated into Poland, and the former camp grounds were transformed into a museum dedicated to preserving the memory of its victims. While the original medieval castle was destroyed, the site remains a poignant reminder of the region's complex past, blending medieval religious heritage with twentieth-century tragedy.
