Pęzino Castle
Pęzino Castle is a historic fortress situated in the center of the village of Pęzino within the West Pomeranian Voivodeship of Poland. Strategically positioned on an artificial hill between the Krąpiel and Pęzinka rivers, the structure was originally established in 1382 by the Knights of Malta. The architectural evolution of the site reflects centuries of modification, blending original Gothic foundations with later Renaissance elements and a distinctive Neo-Gothic wing added during the mid-nineteenth century. Its unique layout features a four-part fortification wall surrounding an irregular courtyard, with living quarters historically designed with windows facing only inward for defensive purposes.
The castle possesses a rich history of ownership and transformation. After being granted as a feud to the Borko family in 1492, who added gables and western windows, the property underwent extensive expansion in 1600 under new management. The Puttkamer family acquired the estate in the early eighteenth century and later landscaped the grounds, replacing outbuildings with gardens and a pavilion. Although a devastating fire destroyed the eastern wing in 1935, subsequent renovations between 1936 and 1940 restored the structure and added a new gatehouse. Following World War II, the castle was seized by the state and gradually deteriorated until a major restoration project was undertaken between 1977 and 1990.
Today, Pęzino Castle has been privatized following its sale by the State Agricultural Treasury. It has been successfully repurposed as a venue for cultural and social gatherings, currently hosting conferences, weddings, and various public events. This adaptive reuse has ensured the preservation of the landmark, allowing visitors to experience a site that has served as a military stronghold, a noble residence, and now a modern event center. The castle remains a significant example of Pomeranian architectural heritage, showcasing layers of history from the medieval period through to contemporary times.
