Penningby castle

Penningby Castle is a well-preserved medieval private castle situated in the Länna parish of Norrtälje Municipality, Uppland, Sweden. Located approximately 70 kilometers north of Stockholm, the estate rests in a valley near Edsviken, a narrow inlet connected to the Baltic Sea. First mentioned in historical records during the 1380s, the site originally featured a predecessor fortress that now exists as an overgrown ruin with a moat. The current structure began taking shape in the late 15th century under Lady Birgitta Tordsdotter Bonde, evolving into a distinctive twin-house design that was unusual for its coastal placement. During the Vasa era, specifically just before the 1550s, Lord Lars Turesson added an immense tower and a new eastern entrance, later enhancing the sea tower with a round salon considered the castle's most beautiful room.

The architectural history of Penningby reflects centuries of adaptation and restoration. In 1805, Countess Maria Juliana von Rosen redesigned the grounds into an English-style garden. Although a devastating fire in 1831 destroyed much of the interior, key elements like the ceiling were restored, and the tower was modified while retaining sections of the original medieval walls. A comprehensive restoration effort took place between 1951 and 1953, leading to its designation as a national cultural heritage site in 1980. Today, the castle stands uninhabited but opens its doors to visitors during the summer months, offering a glimpse into Sweden's noble past.

Beyond its architecture, Penningby holds significant historical connections to notable figures. It served as the birthplace of Svante Nilsson, who acted as the Regent of Sweden from 1504 to 1512. The manor also employed Olof Persson Stille, an early settler who later became a foundational figure in New Sweden and a magistrate in what is now Pennsylvania. These associations, combined with its status as one of the best-preserved castles from the Vasa era, make Penningby a landmark of enduring cultural importance in the region.
