Östanå Castle

Östanå Castle is located in Österåker Municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden, approximately 50 kilometers northeast of Stockholm City. The castle occupies a strategically significant position overlooking the main shipping channel into Stockholm through the Stockholm archipelago and sits near the Östanå ferry port, which connects to the island of Ljusterö.

The castle has a rich medieval heritage, having been owned by various Swedish noble families between the 14th and 17th centuries. In 1687, it was owned by Fabian Wrede. The original wooden structure was destroyed during the Russian Pillage of 1719-1721, and the current main building was constructed between 1791 and 1794. During the late 19th century, the castle served as the residence of Erik Gustaf Boström, who was Prime Minister of Sweden at that time.

The Boström family owned the castle until 2006, when they sold it. By 2016, the castle had fallen into poor condition and was listed for sale at 35 million Swedish kronor. The castle's architectural style reflects its 18th-century reconstruction, following the destruction of its earlier wooden predecessor during the Russian conflicts of the early 18th century.
