Skånelaholm Castle

Skånelaholm Castle is a historic estate located in Sigtuna Municipality within Stockholm County, Sweden. Situated on a peninsula in Lake Fysingen, the main building was constructed between 1639 and 1643 by Andreas Gyldenklou. The architecture reflects a German-Dutch late Renaissance style, originally built of brick. During renovations in the 1890s, the facade was covered in stucco and adorned with ornate decorations that define its current appearance. The structure is flanked by four low wings added in the mid-18th century and is surrounded by a park that evolved from an 18th-century layout into an English landscape garden during the 19th century.

The site holds significant historical depth, with records dating back to 1276 when it was sold by King Magnus Ladulås to Sko Abbey. Following the Swedish Reformation, the crown confiscated the property, and it served as a royal manor for centuries before changing hands among various noble families. Notably, it became the seat of the Jennings family in 1742 after being acquired by the Irish-Swedish merchant Frans Jennings. The castle remained in private ownership until 1918, eventually passing to Herbert and Ing-Marie Rettig. In a move to ensure its preservation, the Rettigs donated the estate to the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities, which currently owns and administers the property.

Today, Skånelaholm Castle is open to the public for guided tours, offering visitors a glimpse into its rich past. The interior features many preserved historical rooms, including a dining room with 17th-century character and a Rococo drawing-room adorned with paintings in the style of François Boucher. The second floor houses a large library and additional reception areas. As a well-maintained cultural landmark, the castle stands as a testament to centuries of Swedish nobility, architectural evolution, and dedicated heritage conservation efforts.
