Palazzolo sull'Oglio

Palazzolo sull'Oglio is a historic city and comune located in the Province of Brescia within the Lombardy region of northern Italy. Situated on the banks of the Oglio River just south of Lake Iseo, it borders the Province of Bergamo and serves as the fifth-largest municipality in its province. While the settlement's origins trace back to ancient times, evidenced by a Roman bridge in the city center dating to the 4th century, the name Palazzolo first appears in historical records around 830 AD. The town was officially elevated to the status of a city by presidential decree on August 24, 1954, cementing its importance within the regional landscape.

The city gained significant historical prominence during the late 19th century when it evolved into a fundamental industrial hub for Italy. Hosting major companies such as Marzoli, Lanfranchi, and Italcementi, it earned the nickname "the small Italian Manchester" due to its bustling manufacturing sector. Architecturally, the skyline is dominated by the Tower of the People, constructed between 1813 and 1830. Standing 85 meters tall with an additional 7-meter statue, it remains the highest round tower in Italy and serves as the enduring symbol of the city. Other notable sights include the local castle, the Ancient Pieve, and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

Today, Palazzolo sull'Oglio is a thriving community with a population exceeding 20,000 residents, known locally as Palazzolesi. It maintains excellent transport connections via the Bergamo–Brescia railway line and the A4 motorway, facilitating easy access to Milan and Venice. The city preserves its rich cultural heritage through its well-maintained historical structures, including the aforementioned castle and Roman bridge, which continue to define its character. Beyond its industrial past and architectural landmarks, the city is also recognized for its contributions to the arts and sciences, having been the birthplace of notable figures ranging from cardinals to modern television personalities.
