Montebuono

Montebuono is a small historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively, it serves as a frazione of the comune of Sorano and is situated in the distinctive tuff area of southern Maremma. The settlement lies approximately 75 kilometers from Grosseto and 12 kilometers from Sorano, positioned along the provincial road connecting Castell'Azzara and Elmo to Sovana. Known during the Middle Ages by the name Tucciano, the village is currently composed of two distinct hamlets called Appalto and Dispensa. As of the 2011 census, the population was recorded at just 28 residents, reflecting its status as a quiet, rural community.

The architectural heritage of Montebuono features several notable religious structures and defensive remnants. The main parish church, Sant'Andrea, dates back to the 13th century and has undergone multiple restructurings over the centuries; it houses significant late-Renaissance paintings. In the hamlet of Dispensa stands the church of Madonna del Cerro, which was constructed in 1686 and later restored in 1982. The site also includes the Castle of Montebuono, an ancient fortress that originally defined the village but now exists in ruins. These structures highlight the area's long history of habitation and religious importance within the Diocese of Pitigliano-Sovana-Orbetello.

Today, Montebuono remains a preserved slice of Tuscan history, characterized by its ancient walls and ecclesiastical art rather than modern development. While the castle has fallen into disrepair, the churches continue to serve as cultural landmarks for the few remaining inhabitants and visitors exploring the Maremma countryside. The village offers a glimpse into medieval life in southern Tuscany, maintaining its traditional layout and historical identity despite its diminished population.
