Sassofortino

Sassofortino is a historic medieval village located in the heart of Tuscany, central Italy. Administratively, it serves as a frazione within the comune of Roccastrada in the province of Grosseto. Perched at an elevation of 560 meters above sea level, this hilly settlement is situated approximately 33 kilometers from the city of Grosseto and just 8 kilometers from Roccastrada. The community, known as Sassofortinesi, recorded a population of roughly 748 residents in 2011, maintaining its status as a small but significant locality in the Maremma region.

The architectural heritage of Sassofortino is defined by its medieval origins and strategic past. The most prominent historical structure is the Castle of Sassoforte, an eleventh-century fortress that once guarded the area. Although the castle now stands in ruins, it remains a testament to the village's defensive importance during the Middle Ages. The spiritual and social center of the village is the parish church dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo. Originally constructed in the fourteenth century, this religious site underwent significant restructuring in 1893, preserving its role as a main sight for visitors and locals alike.
