Boccheggiano

Boccheggiano is a historic village located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, specifically within the province of Grosseto. Administratively, it serves as a frazione of the comune of Montieri and sits at an elevation of 664 meters in the Colline Metallifere area. The settlement is positioned approximately 48 kilometers from Grosseto and 8 kilometers from Montieri, lying along the provincial road that connects Massa Marittima with Monticiano. Historically, the village held significant importance as a mining community, leveraging its location in a mineral-rich zone to support local industry and growth over the centuries.

The architectural landscape of Boccheggiano reflects its long history, featuring fortifications and religious structures spanning several eras. The village has been surrounded by defensive walls since the 13th century, with the Porta della Torricella serving as the main gate to the medieval center. Religious heritage is represented by the Church of San Bartolomeo, originally built in the 15th century and restructured multiple times, and the Church of San Sebastiano, which dates back to the 14th century. In the 20th century, the village expanded its cultural infrastructure with the construction of a municipal theatre in 1927.

Today, Boccheggiano maintains its character as a small residential community while also hosting unique cultural attractions. Beyond its well-preserved medieval core and historic churches, the village is home to the Giardino dei Suoni, or Garden of Sounds. This contemporary art park was founded by artist Paul Fuchs, adding a modern creative dimension to the traditional setting. With a population recorded at 311 residents in 2011, the village continues to preserve its identity as a former mining hub turned cultural destination within the Tuscan countryside.
