# Hamtoren (Den Ham Castle)

The Hamtoren is the remains of Den Ham Castle, a historical fortification located in Vleuten, Utrecht, in the Netherlands. Situated north of the Utrecht–Rotterdam railway line on an old road connecting Harmelen and Utrecht, the castle was strategically positioned near a curve of the Oude Rijn river, which provided a defensible location and allowed its owner to control the surrounding area. Construction of the residential tower likely began around 1260, with the castle first documented in a 1325 charter.

The castle experienced significant military action throughout its history. Most notably, Den Ham was besieged for twelve weeks during the Utrecht war of 1481–83, resulting in plundering and partial destruction before being rebuilt with an additional second tower. In 1536, the States of Utrecht recognized Den Ham as a knightly manor. The fortress remained in use through the 18th century, with the Hacfort family taking possession in 1711 until 1811. Around 1872, the deteriorating castle was largely demolished, leaving only the 15th-century tower standing. The structure was restored approximately a century later and again in 2020.

Today, the tower is privately owned and rarely opens to visitors. In 2016, musician Bas Kennis of the band Blof purchased the property with plans to convert it into a recording studio. The six-story tower features 1.5-meter-thick brick walls, stands approximately 27 meters high, and includes a basement with preserved medieval beams. A turret with an observation deck tops the structure, bringing the total height to roughly 35 meters.
