De Haar Castle

De Haar Castle, known locally as Kasteel de Haar, is situated in the village of Haarzuilens just outside Utrecht in the Netherlands. Recognized as the largest castle in the country, the current structure was built between 1892 and 1907, although the site itself holds a much deeper history dating back to 1391. Originally a fiefdom of the De Haar family, the property passed to the Van Zuylen family in the 15th century before falling into ruin after 1641. The medieval fortress suffered significant damage when it was burned down in 1482, and despite partial rebuilding efforts in the 16th century, it gradually decayed over subsequent centuries until only remnants of the original walls remained.

The castle's magnificent revival began in 1890 when Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nyevelt van de Haar inherited the estate. Together with his wife, Baroness Hélène de Rothschild, he commissioned the renowned architect Pierre Cuypers to lead a comprehensive restoration project that lasted twenty years. Financed by the wealthy Rothschild family, Cuypers designed the castle in a romantic neo-Gothic architectural style, creating a sprawling complex featuring 200 rooms and 30 bathrooms. The renovation incorporated cutting-edge technology for the era, including an independent electrical generator and a steam-based central heating system, the latter of which is now recognized as an international industrial monument.

Today, De Haar Castle is owned by the Foundation Kasteel de Haar and remains in good condition. While the aristocratic owners still utilize certain private quarters, the grounds and a selection of rooms on the lower floors are open to the public for tours. Visitors can explore the lavish interiors, view the extensive collection of original copper cookware in the massive kitchen, and see a statue of Cuypers placed within the gallery. The estate stands as a testament to 19th-century romanticism and engineering, preserving both its medieval roots and its grand Gilded Age transformation.
