Gunterstein Castle

Gunterstein Castle is a historic brick residence located in Breukelen, Netherlands, situated along the scenic Vecht river. Constructed in 1681, the building was designed by the renowned architect Adriaan Dortsman on the foundations of earlier fortifications that had been destroyed by French troops during the Franco-Dutch War of 1672. The site holds deep historical roots, having previously hosted a fourteenth-century castle named after Gysbrecht Gunter and later serving as the property of statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt before his execution in 1619. The current structure represents a significant reconstruction effort following the devastation of the Rampjaar, or Disaster Year, which saw many regional strongholds burned.

The castle is most famously associated with Magdalena Poulle, a wealthy Amsterdam widow who purchased the estate in 1680 and adopted the title Lady Gunterstein. She transformed the property into a center for botanical innovation, commissioning an influential book of etchings titled Veues de Gunterstein that documented her extensive gardens and early orangerie. Her passion for horticulture inspired other prominent collectors of the era to cultivate unusual plants and record their findings. Architectural details from her tenure remain visible today, including her family shield above the windows and a portrait by David van der Plas depicting her nephew laying the foundation stone.

Currently, Gunterstein Castle serves as a summer home and remains open to the public, preserving its legacy as a monument to Dutch resilience and garden history. While the interior retains elements from the late seventeenth century, the estate stands as a testament to the transition from military stronghold to refined country residence. Its survival and restoration after repeated destruction highlight its enduring importance within the cultural landscape of the Utrecht province, offering visitors a glimpse into the life of one of the Netherlands' most notable female botanists and the architectural vision of Dortsman.
