Elghammar Castle

Elghammar Castle, often referred to by its owners as an Italian villa, is a historic manor house located in Gnesta Municipality within Södermanland County, Sweden. Situated approximately 80 kilometers southwest of Stockholm at the end of Lake Lockvattnet, the estate is nestled among dense forests and working farmland. While the property originally belonged to the Kruse family and later Johan Adolf Welander, its current architectural identity was established in 1807 when Marshal Curt von Stedingk purchased the manor. Von Stedingk commissioned significant new constructions designed in the French Empire style, giving the residence its distinctive classical character that remains visible today.

The site holds considerable historical significance due to its long association with the noble Fouché d'Otrante family, descendants of Joseph Fouché, the famous French Minister of Police under Emperor Napoleon. Through a series of inheritances and marriages between the von Stedingk and Otrante lines, the property passed to the Dukes of Otrante. For many years, it was owned by Duchess Christina d'Otrante, who managed the estate alongside her husband, the 7th Duke. Following Christina's death at the age of 83, ownership transferred to Charles-Louis Fouché d'Otrante, the 8th Duke, continuing the family's multi-generational stewardship of the land.

Currently, Elghammar operates as a private residence and active farm rather than a public museum or tourist attraction. The estate maintains its rural charm, surrounded by the natural woodlands that have defined its setting for centuries. Although specific details regarding public access are limited, the property stands as a well-preserved example of early 19th-century Swedish architecture influenced by French imperial design. Its continuous occupation by European nobility highlights its role as a unique cultural bridge between Swedish provincial life and French aristocratic history.
