Castle Saalhof

Castle Saalhof is located in the Pinzgau region of Austria. The castle dates back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest in the region. It was initially the home of the Counts of the region. The castle has undergone several renovations and extensions over the years, including a significant rebuild in 1600 by Christoff Amann from Judendorf and Saal. This rebuild gave the castle its typical regional style, which is still visible today.

The castle has changed hands many times throughout its history, with notable owners including the Amann family, the Riedl family, and the Kobald family. In 1840, the castle was bought by the landlord Josef Zehentner, a direct ancestor of the Rieder family who currently owns the castle. In recent years, the castle has undergone further renovations, including the restoration of its facade and the old colors from the 17th century in 2010.

Today, Castle Saalhof is a private building that offers newly renovated apartments for rent. The Meier's house on the eastern side of the castle, which was once the dwelling of the curator, farm laborers, and servants, is also part of the private property. The castle and its surrounding gardens, including a herb garden and a barbecue hut, are well-maintained and reflect the rich history of the region. Since 1992, the castle and its associated buildings have been under federal conservation of monuments and historic buildings, ensuring their preservation for future generations.
