Burgruine Aichelburg

Burgruine Aichelberg, also known as Aichelberg Castle, is a historic fortress ruin located in Carinthia, Austria. Perched on an 850-metre geological spur in the Ossiacher Tauern mountains northeast of Wernberg, the site originally commanded vital pre-alpine trade routes connecting the Drava valley with the Carinthian interior. While masonry evidence suggests an earlier fortification, the castle first entered written records in 1224 under the knight Reinher de Eychelberc. The structure holds significant historical importance as the first allodial residence of the rising Khevenhüller dynasty, who acquired the freehold in 1435 after the original male line failed.

The architectural character of the ruin largely reflects reconstruction efforts around 1500 following damage sustained during Emperor Frederick III's war with Hungary in 1484. The Khevenhüller family rebuilt the complex into a compact, artillery-resistant residence featuring late Gothic mouldings and Renaissance plaster fragments, marking its transition from a feudal fortress to a gentlemanly seat. Key surviving elements include a three-storey gate tower with a former spiral stair turret, a stout enceinte protecting the southern approach, and a four-storey residential block. The original bergfried was likely demolished in the sixteenth century to create a gun platform.

After changing hands due to economic decline and religious shifts in the seventeenth century, the castle fell into decay, with roofs collapsing by 1688. It remained abandoned for centuries until structural failures in the 1990s prompted urgent action. A major conservation campaign launched in 2016 through a partnership between local authorities and heritage organizations successfully stabilized the palas and cleared invasive vegetation. Since September 2022, the site has been open to the public from April to October, serving as a celebrated model for community-based heritage stewardship.
