Castle Coole

Castle Coole is a prominent neo-classical mansion located in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Set within a sprawling 1,200-acre wooded estate that includes Lough Coole and other scenic lakes, the property serves as one of three National Trust sites in the county. Although the name suggests a medieval fortress, the current structure is an elegant late-18th-century residence built between 1789 and 1798. It was commissioned by Armar Lowry-Corry, the 1st Earl Belmore, to function as a summer retreat for his wealthy family, who had accumulated vast landholdings through successful mercantile ventures in Belfast.

The site holds significant historical depth, with evidence of settlement dating back to prehistoric times in the form of ancient raths and crannogs found on the grounds. The estate itself was purchased in 1656 by John Corry, the Earl's grandfather, replacing an earlier 17th-century house and formal garden that are now designated as Scheduled Historic Monuments. Constructed at a substantial cost of £57,000, the mansion stands as a testament to the prosperity of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy during this era. Its architectural style reflects the refined tastes of the period, emphasizing symmetry and classical proportions typical of the neo-classical movement.

Today, Castle Coole is preserved and managed by the National Trust, ensuring its survival as a key cultural landmark in Northern Ireland.
