Necarne Castle

Necarne Castle, also historically known as Castle Irvine, is a distinctive Victorian Gothic house located near Irvinestown in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Although the current structure was designed by architect John Benjamin Keane and completed in 1835, the site holds much older historical roots. A fortified castle was originally established here around 1619 by Gerard Lowther, a Scottish planter, marking the location as a seat of significance for over four centuries. The building is recognized for its architectural merit and holds a Grade B+ listed status, placing it on the Register of Parks, Gardens and Demesnes of Special Historic Interest.

The property features a prominent two-storey façade that exemplifies the Gothic revival style popular during the Victorian era. Throughout its history, the estate has transitioned from a private residence to a facility serving public and governmental needs. In the 1990s, the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs secured a twenty-five-year lease to operate the grounds as an equine training centre. This specific use continued until the lease expired in 2023, representing a modern chapter in the castle's long narrative of adaptation and utility.

Today, Necarne Castle stands as a testament to the region's layered history, blending early seventeenth-century plantation origins with nineteenth-century architectural elegance. Its designation as a listed building ensures the preservation of its unique character, while its past function as a specialized training hub highlights its versatility.
