Monea Castle

Monea Castle is a historic fortified structure located in the townland of Castletown Monea, near the village of Monea in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Designated as a State Care Historic Monument, the site sits at grid reference H1647 4937 on land that previously held a castle belonging to the Maguire clan before the Plantation of Ulster. Remnants of this earlier occupation remain visible today in the form of a crannog, an artificial island dwelling, which underscores the strategic importance of the location long before the current building was erected.

Construction of the present castle commenced in 1616, with a defensive bawn wall added later in 1622 to enhance its security. Architecturally, it serves as a notable example of a Plantation-era stronghold, built to consolidate English and Scottish settlement in the region. The castle holds significant historical weight due to its role during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. During this turbulent period, the fortress served as a refuge for local Protestants fleeing violence, only to be subsequently attacked by forces led by Rory Maguire. This event highlights the intense sectarian conflicts that defined the era in Ulster.

Today, Monea Castle stands as a ruined monument under the care of the state, preserving the physical legacy of seventeenth-century colonial architecture and local strife. While no longer inhabited or used for defensive purposes, the site remains an important cultural landmark within the Fermanagh District Council area. It offers visitors a tangible connection to the complex history of the Plantations and the subsequent rebellions that shaped Northern Ireland. The ruins continue to be recognized alongside other significant castles in the region as a testament to the area's turbulent past.
